Auto detailing

Auto detailing marketing that fills bays, not feeds.

Most detailing shops run their marketing through a single channel, Instagram, funded by whatever is left over after tools and product. That keeps washes coming. It does almost nothing for the coating and correction jobs that carry the margin, because that buyer moves on a different channel and a different clock. Marketing this trade is mostly a question of where the budget goes and when in the year it goes there.

Quick answer

A detailing shop is really funding two small marketing programs out of one budget. Maintenance work runs on cheap, high-frequency channels, an accurate profile, local promotion, a fast reply, because that buyer decides the same week on price and proximity. Protection work, coating, film, correction, needs a slower channel: photography, review requests, and service pages that prove the craft, because that buyer researches for weeks before choosing. The split is a budget and calendar question more than a keyword one, and the weighting should shift toward protection-buyer channels as spring approaches.

Two budgets, one bay

The buyer split itself is covered in full on the search side of this method. The marketing question is different: not who each buyer is, but which channel and how much spend actually wins them.

Marketing to the maintenance customer

This is volume marketing: an accurate, fast-loading profile, local promotion timed to slow weeks, and a review ask built into every handover. Keep the spend low and the cadence constant. This customer fills gaps between coating jobs; it does not fund growth on its own.

Marketing to the protection customer

This is proof marketing: finished-work photography under real light, service pages that name the product and the process, and reviews that read like a comparable job to the one this buyer wants done. It is slower to build and it is where most of a detailing budget should actually sit, because one sale here covers a month of the campaign that won it.

Why the good work never reaches the search results

Nearly every detailing shop posts its best work to Instagram and nowhere else. That content builds an audience of other detailers and enthusiasts who will never book. Meanwhile the profile that decides the local search has four photos from 2022 and no service list.

  • Photos of finished work belong on the profile first. Image relevance genuinely affects performance; embedded GPS metadata does not, because Google strips it on upload and controlled testing found no ranking effect.
  • Services should name products and processes. Protection buyers search by brand and technique, and a shop whose services list says only “detailing” cannot rank for how they search.
  • Reviews should be requested at handover, when the customer is standing in front of a car that looks better than they expected. That is the single highest-yield moment in the whole business and most shops walk past it.
  • Mobile and shop-based operations need different service-area setups. Getting this wrong is a common cause of poor coverage and, occasionally, suspension.

The arithmetic

One ceramic coating job typically covers a month of local SEO investment on its own. That is the whole business case, and it is why the sensible target for a detailing campaign is not volume. It is a small, steady number of protection enquiries from people who already know what they want. A shop that adds one coating a month from search has paid for the channel and everything after it is margin.

Questions we get

Frequently asked questions

We get lots of Instagram engagement but few bookings. Why?

Because the audience is mostly other detailers and enthusiasts, not local buyers with a vehicle and a budget. Social builds reputation; local search captures intent. The fix is usually not more posting, it is moving the same photographs onto the profile and service pages where people searching for a coating in your city will actually see them.

Should we geotag our photos?

No. Google strips location metadata from images on upload, and a controlled test across 27 locations found no ranking benefit. Some declined. Anyone charging you for geotagging is billing for a disproven tactic. Photo relevance and quality do matter; the metadata does not.

We are mobile only. Does this still work?

Yes, but the profile has to be configured as a service-area business correctly, and the realistic coverage is different. Mobile operations often do better across a wider grid than a fixed shop, because proximity works differently when there is no storefront to be far from.

How many coatings a month would make this worthwhile?

Usually one. Run your own numbers on a typical coating margin against a monthly investment starting at $1,000 and you will have your answer before the assessment call.
