Google Business Profile optimization that starts with the fundamentals.

A Google Business Profile is how an eligible business shows up on Google Search and Maps. Before we ask how to rank higher, we ask whether everything on the profile is accurate. Google says a complete, accurate profile is more likely to appear for relevant local searches.

Quick answer

A Google Business Profile (GBP) was once called Google My Business. It is the free tool a business uses to manage how it shows on Google Search and Maps. Name, category, address, phone, hours, services, photos and reviews. Google uses this data, plus other public and contributed data, to pick local results. Google says local ranking comes from relevance, distance and prominence. It also says a complete, accurate profile is more likely to show for relevant searches. Digital Handshake treats profile work as one part of a wider system. Not a standalone trick.

Rule one

Accuracy comes before optimization

Before “how do we rank higher,” ask a different question first. Is everything about this business accurate? Google says businesses with complete, accurate information are more likely to show for relevant local searches. So real profile work starts with an audit of reality. Not a list of tricks.

What we audit, in order

Ten checks, run in this order. The first weeks of any real profile work are an audit of reality, not a list of tricks.

Confirmed before anything else is attempted. If the business is not eligible for a profile the way it is set up, no amount of optimization fixes that.

Does the profile represent the real business? The name should be the real name, not padded with keywords or cities.

The single strongest relevance field on a profile, and wrong more often than anything else we check. It should say what the business actually is, not the category with the biggest guessed search volume.

Extra context where it is genuinely accurate. Not every category that is loosely related.

Should match what the business really does, and be echoed naturally on the website. Adding Google’s predefined services was one of the biggest movers in the 2026 survey.

Address, phone, website, hours, special hours, service area and attributes, all checked for accuracy. Being open at search time is now a top-five Local Pack factor in the 2026 survey.

Real photos and video: completed work, the team, the space. Not a stock upload for its own sake.

Google says review count and positive ratings can help local ranking. The goal is a repeatable system that makes it easy for real customers to leave honest feedback, never a fake one. Recency now matters more than volume. More on reviews →

Google says it can use crawled content from a business’s official website to source business information. If the profile says “emergency HVAC” and the site barely mentions HVAC, that is a real gap.

Optimization without measurement is opinion. We track visibility, geographic footprint, calls, website actions, direction requests and review growth. How we measure →

What we refuse to do to a profile

  • No keyword-stuffed business names. The name is the real name, not a list of services and cities.
  • No fake locations. A virtual office or an empty address is not a real customer-facing location, even if it would widen your coverage.
  • No fake reviews. Reviews come from real customers or they do not go up.
  • No duplicate profiles made to take up more of the local results.
  • No ranking guarantee. Google has no way to pay for a better local rank, and neither do we.

The distinction

GBP vs. local SEO

A Business Profile is the listing Google manages for the business. Local SEO is the wider system: the profile, plus the website, content, technical SEO, reviews, citations, authority and measurement. Profile work is one part of local SEO, not another word for it. An agency that only touches the profile is doing a fraction of the job. The full local SEO picture →

An old paper business card next to a phone showing a clean Google Business Profile card: map, rating, reviews, and call and website buttons.
For most local searches, the profile is the first impression, not the website or a card.

How this fits the Digital Handshake method

The baseline scan

We measure the profile and the map coverage it produces before anything is touched.

The 12-week roadmap

Category, services and business information get fixed in the first weeks. This is usually the fastest-moving part of the roadmap.

The re-scan

We re-measure coverage against the same baseline. Profile changes show up as evidence, not a claim.

Frequently asked questions

Does Google Business Profile affect rankings?

Yes. Profile data is part of how Google ranks local results. Google says a complete, accurate profile is more likely to appear for relevant local searches.

Does adding keywords to my business name improve rankings?

Don’t manipulate the business name. It should represent the real business.

How many categories or photos should I use?

There’s no universal number for either. Use categories that accurately describe the business, and prioritize authentic, useful imagery over volume.

Can reviews improve local ranking?

Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help. They have to be genuine.

Can GBP work alone get us a top 3 position?

No. It’s the highest-leverage single piece, not the whole system.
