A digital handshake is the first exchange between two parties online, before any real work begins. In computing, it is two devices agreeing how to talk before data moves. In business, it is the first impression a customer forms of you online: your Google listing, reviews, website and AI answers. Both meanings share one idea: set up the connection first.
The short version
- In computing, two devices agree how to connect before data moves. How it works.
- Between people, it is the first online contact, like a first email or video call. What it covers.
- In marketing, it is greeting customers online to earn trust. Paul Chaney used it as a 2009 book title. The book.
- In UK tax, it is how a client approves a tax agent. The HMRC step.
- For a local business, it is the first impression a customer gets before they call. What it means for you.

What is a digital handshake in computing and networking?
In computing, a digital handshake is the step where two devices agree how to talk before they send data. Wikipedia defines a handshake as a process where two devices set up a link. They do it by checking each other’s signals.
The best-known example is the TCP three-way handshake. RFC 9293, the standard for TCP, calls it the “procedure used to establish a connection.” It takes three steps:
- SYN. The client asks to connect.
- SYN-ACK. The server agrees and asks the client to confirm.
- ACK. The client confirms. Data can now flow.
Secure websites add a second handshake on top. RFC 8446 defines TLS 1.3. It calls the handshake an initial negotiation between client and server. The two sides agree on a protocol version, pick the encryption methods and set up shared keys. They can also check each other’s identity. A browser does this when it sets up a secure connection.
What is a digital handshake between people online?
Between people, a digital handshake is the first online contact. It stands in for shaking hands in a room. It might be a first email, a LinkedIn request, a short message or the greeting on a video call.
Oneflow’s guide describes it as the first interaction between people online. It happens through email, social media and online platforms. A clear, polite first message does the job a firm handshake does in person.
What is the digital handshake in marketing?
In marketing, the digital handshake is how a business greets customers online to earn trust and start a two-way conversation. Blogs, websites and social networks do the greeting. It replaces one-way advertising, where the business talks and the customer only listens. Business books and blogs often use the phrase in this sense.
Paul Chaney used the phrase as the title of a business book. It is called The Digital Handshake: Seven Proven Strategies to Grow Your Business Using Social Media. Wiley published it in September 2009. Wiley says the book explains why advertising and marketing are losing their effectiveness. It also covers how to use social media to reach consumers. Its author note calls Chaney “a leading authority on blogging and social media.”
The chapter titles show the idea. Chapter six asks what a marketer should do. The answer is “Start a Conversation.” Later chapters include “Listening Is the New Marketing” and “Now That You’ve Listened, It’s Time to Engage.”
The book covers seven strategies. They are business blogging, social networks, niche online communities, microblogging, online video, podcasting and PR 2.0, the social media news release.
The tools have changed since 2009. The order has not: greet people, listen, then talk. DHM INTERPRETATION
What is the HMRC digital handshake?
In the UK, the digital handshake is the online step where a client approves a tax agent. GOV.UK says an agent with an agent services account must use the digital handshake to get authorised by each client. Once the client approves the request, the agent can deal with HM Revenue and Customs for them. HMRC last updated that guidance on 1 September 2025.
It has nothing to do with marketing or networking. If that is the page you wanted, the GOV.UK link above goes straight to it.
What does a digital handshake mean for a local business?
For a local business, the digital handshake is the first impression a customer gets of you online. It comes before they call. Today that is usually your Google Business Profile in Maps, your reviews, your website or an AI answer. Customers judge what they find. That decides whether they pick up the phone. DHM INTERPRETATION
Picture a truck pulling up to a house. Your listing is the handshake, and your website is the truck. We wrote about what a weak digital handshake costs in The invisible thief stealing your best customers.
A strong digital handshake has five parts:
- The first look. Your Google Business Profile and where you appear in the Map Pack. Google says local results rest on relevance, distance and prominence, and that no one can pay for a better local ranking. GOOGLE DOCUMENTED
- The proof. Reviews and photos from real jobs. Reply to the reviews and keep both fresh. See how to get more Google reviews.
- The consistency. The same name, address and phone number everywhere a customer or an AI assistant might look. See NAP consistency.
- The landing. A website that matches the listing, with clear pages and schema markup that machines can read.
- The AI answer. What assistants such as ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews say about you when someone asks. See AI search optimization.
These five parts are our working model, not an industry standard. DHM INTERPRETATION
Is Digital Handshake Media the same as a digital handshake?
No. Digital Handshake Media, also called DHM, is a local SEO agency in Vancouver, British Columbia. Omar Alocozy founded it in 2020. It helps local service businesses make a strong first impression in Google Maps and in AI answers, and it is a Google Partner. You can read its public Google reviews.
It is not a security or software product. It is also not affiliated with Paul Chaney’s book, the HMRC service, or any other company with “handshake” in its name. The About page has the full operating facts, and the glossary defines the terms we use.
How Digital Handshake Media builds yours
The work follows the five parts above, on a 12-week roadmap. It starts with a free market assessment, before anything is charged.
- The goal. Show up across your whole service area, not only near your own address.
- The proof. A dated geo-grid heat map is your baseline. A re-scan against it shows what moved, so results are measured, not guessed.
- The speed. Month one is onboarding, your profile and baseline scans. Month two is your website structure and schema. Month three is citation and NAP cleanup, the re-scan, and the AI layer. See the full method.
- The effort. We do the work. You supply the reviews and photos, and keep your business data consistent.
- The risk. We do not guarantee a Map Pack position. Google says no one can pay for a better local ranking, and Google Search Central says no one can guarantee a #1 ranking. GOOGLE DOCUMENTED What you get instead is a measurement program: a dated baseline, a week-12 re-scan of the same grid, and a written diagnosis.
- The limit. One client per industry, per area. Read our ground rules.
Most clients invest between $1,000 and $3,500 a month, in US dollars, with a fixed quote after the free assessment. See pricing. If 12 weeks is more than you want to commit to, Map Check-Ins is $299 a month, month to month.
