Updates · a new note every week
What local service owners are actually running into, answered as it happens.
Quick answer
This week, October 20, 2026. AI search is a small slice of traffic, and two agency studies say it is turning into more orders. ChatGPT sent 0.32% of website traffic in May 2026 (SE Ranking), IDHL and Shero report more orders from AI visits, and both use their own clients’ data. Google Analytics 4 now has an AI Assistant channel and Search Console has a Generative AI report, so you can measure it. What to do this week: check both, and ask every new lead how they found you. Our Sauce deep-dive turns the Shero study into a quick check for service businesses. Also this week: a practitioner found Google’s AI Overview quoting one competitor’s listicle for an entire category.
Updates is a weekly note on what changed in Google, Maps and AI search, and what it means for a local service business. Each one starts from something real owners and practitioners are running into, adds our own readings from Search Console, Google Analytics and rank scans, labels every claim by how well it is sourced, and ends with what to do this week.

Questions we get
Frequently asked questions
How often is Updates published?
A new note goes up every week, usually by Friday, covering what changed in Google, Maps and AI search and what a local service business should do about it. If something material breaks mid-week, such as a policy change or a bug that affects rankings, it gets a note as soon as it is confirmed.
Where do the topics come from?
From three places: real questions and complaints that owners and practitioners post publicly, changes announced by Google or reported by Search Engine Land and Search Engine Roundtable, and our own readings from Google Analytics, Search Console, rank scans and search data. Each note says which is which.
How is Updates different from Sauce?
Updates is the short, dated note: what happened this week and what to do. Sauce is the deeper explainer for a topic too big for a note. When an Update opens a bigger question, we link to the Sauce post that answers it in full.
Do you guarantee rankings or AI mentions?
No. We do not guarantee rankings, and we do not guarantee mentions in ChatGPT, Gemini or AI Mode either. Every claim in a note is labelled by how well it is sourced, so you can see what is documented, what is independent research, what is community reports and what is our own interpretation.
