ChatGPT stopped tagging its referrals. Your AI leads now look like Direct.
Quick answer
Search Engine Land reported on October 15, 2026 that ChatGPT links appear to have dropped the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag, so visits it sends now land in Direct. OpenAI has not said whether this is deliberate. Google also rearranged AI Mode and AI Overview links again, and still gives no click data for them. For a local business, the fix is to measure AI leads by asking, not by tag.

What changed
On October 15, 2026, Search Engine Land reported that ChatGPT links appear to have stopped carrying the utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter and may now suppress referral information. INDEPENDENT RESEARCH Adobe’s Cedric Huesler examined roughly 500 pages where ChatGPT had previously supplied at least 5% of visits, comparing October 9 to 13 with the week before. On those pages ChatGPT traffic fell by about 31,000 visits a day while Direct rose by about 26,000 a day, and search traffic fell 7%. Two-thirds of the pages that lost ChatGPT referrals gained Direct traffic. INDEPENDENT RESEARCH Two caveats come with that: OpenAI has not confirmed the change is intentional, and the analysis does not show that every missing referral has the same cause. INDEPENDENT RESEARCH
This attribution problem predates the October change. Practical Ecommerce’s GA4 guide says Google Analytics misclassifies some ChatGPT traffic as Direct or Unassigned because ChatGPT often adds a noreferrer attribute that suppresses referrer information. INDEPENDENT RESEARCH Clickport’s September 18 write-up adds a qualification: a missing referrer does not always mean a visit is recorded as Direct. A URL tag can preserve the source without a referrer, and GA4 can continue to credit an earlier source. INDEPENDENT RESEARCH That makes the October change a bigger version of an old problem. DHM INTERPRETATION
Google also changed the links in AI Mode and AI Overviews. Search Engine Land reported on October 15 that Google added inline links higher in AI responses, a dedicated links section at the top when only a couple of official sources exist, article carousels for timely queries in more locations and languages, and clickable creator profiles on videos in AI Mode. Google also said use of Preferred Sources grew 7x this year. GOOGLE DOCUMENTED Schwartz doubts searchers will click, noting that Google still does not give click data for these features in Search Console reports. Search Engine Roundtable’s headline on the same change says Google will not show click data. INDEPENDENT RESEARCH
Before blaming AI for an organic dip, check another possible cause: Google’s Search Status Dashboard lists the September 2026 spam update, which began September 24 and ran 13 days, 16 hours. GOOGLE DOCUMENTED If your organic numbers moved in early October, check whether the timing aligns with that update.

No datasearch volume for four AI-tracking phrases
Google Ads data via DataForSEO (US, October 16) returned no volume for “chatgpt referral traffic”, “track chatgpt traffic in ga4”, “ai traffic in google analytics” and “chatgpt direct traffic”. A missing volume points to very few searches, not necessarily none. Owners are more likely to meet this problem in their own dashboards than in a search. DHM DATA
Our data is too small to identify the reported October shift. At this volume, GA4’s Direct line cannot distinguish someone typing a web address from an AI click. DHM DATA
What this means for a local service business
Some AI-sourced leads may never appear in a referrer report. A homeowner who asks an assistant for a plumber in Surrey might read the answer, then call, tap directions on a map, or type your name. None of those is a tagged click. They may show up as phone calls, Business Profile actions, branded searches and Direct visits. This change matters less for lead counts than for how you read your dashboard. DHM INTERPRETATION
The risk is a bad decision, not a lost visit. If ChatGPT and Direct move in opposite directions on the same pages, an owner or an agency can conclude AI stopped working when the visits only changed label. The reverse is also possible: a Direct spike could be credited to AI without evidence. Treat both readings as hypotheses until a customer tells you how they found you. Being named by an assistant and being measured are separate problems; see our notes on AI search optimization and on getting ChatGPT to recommend your business. DHM INTERPRETATION
Do this week
- Build a floor, not a total. Create an AI assistants channel group in GA4 for sources that still pass a referrer, and read it as the minimum. The steps are in how to measure AI referrals without UTM tags.
- Ask every new lead. Add one required question to every form and call script: “How did you hear about us?” with “AI assistant” as an option. Self-reported source is now your best available signal. Our free scan covers the signals that do not depend on a referrer.
- Annotate October 9 to 13. Add the date range to your analytics notes so nobody compares it with another month without knowing about the label change.
- Check what the assistants say about your business name. Our entity check takes five minutes and shows whether you are being described but not recommended.
- Read Direct next to real outcomes. Put Business Profile calls and direction requests beside Direct sessions in your monthly report and look at them together.
