A Google Business Profile suspension means Google removed your listing for a guidelines problem: a keyword-stuffed name, an address that breaks the rules, a mismatch with your legal registration, a prohibited business type, or too many risky edits at once. Fix the real cause first, then file one reinstatement request with documentation. Clean cases usually resolve in a few days to a few weeks. Do not edit repeatedly or create a second profile.
By the numbers
- Two states: a "soft" suspension leaves the profile visible but unverified with limited editing; a "hard" suspension removes it from Maps and Search entirely. GOOGLE DOCUMENTED
- Name and address issues are the most common triggers reported by local SEO practitioners, followed by registration mismatches and service-area rule breaks. INDEPENDENT RESEARCH
- One request, then wait. Google reviews reinstatement appeals in the order received; duplicate appeals reset your place in the queue. GOOGLE DOCUMENTED
- Enforcement is opaque by design. Platforms rarely state the exact rule broken, so the fix is often inferred from the guidelines, not told to you (Suzor et al., International Journal of Communication, 2019). INDEPENDENT RESEARCH
Soft vs hard suspension
- The profile still shows on Maps and Search.
- Your dashboard says "suspended" and editing is limited or blocked.
- Verification status is pulled; you may be asked to re-verify.
- Usually a lighter issue: a recent edit, a category, an unverified change.
- The profile is gone from Maps and Search. Customers cannot find it.
- Reviews are hidden while it is down; they return if it is reinstated.
- Usually a harder issue: address rules, name stuffing, registration mismatch, prior violations.
- Needs a reinstatement request with documentation, not just a re-verify.
The usual causes
Work down this list and find yours before you appeal. The appeal only works if the cause is already fixed.
A virtual office, a co-working space, a PO box, or a home address shown publicly when you are a service-area business. Service-area businesses must hide the address and set a service area instead.
The name field must be your real-world name only. "Dave's Plumbing Surrey Emergency 24/7" is a violation. It must match your signage, website and registration.
Google checks the name and address against business registries and licences. A trading name that is not on file, or an address that does not match, can trigger a suspension, especially after an edit.
Some categories have extra rules or are not allowed at all. A profile for something Google does not list businesses for will not stay up.
Changing the name, address and category on the same day, especially on an older profile, looks like a hijack to Google's filters. Space real changes out and expect a re-verification.
A history of guideline breaks, or management by an account tied to other suspended profiles, raises the bar. Clean up the account, not just the one listing.
The reinstatement sequence
Stop editing
Do not change anything else. More edits during a review muddy the picture and can reset the queue.
Find and fix the cause
Match your profile against the guidelines line by line. Fix the name, hide the address if you are service-area, correct anything that does not match your registration.
Gather proof
Business licence or registration, a utility bill at the address, photos of signage and vehicles, and anything showing the business is real and operating where it says.
File one reinstatement request
Use the official reinstatement form once. Explain the fix plainly and attach the documents. Then wait. One request, not five.
Wait, then follow up through the right channel
Give it a week or two. If it is denied or silent, reply to the same thread or raise it in the Google Business Profile community with your case number, not a fresh appeal.
What not to do
- Do not create a second profile. Duplicates get merged or removed and can pull down the original's chances.
- Do not submit multiple appeals. Each one resets your place in the review queue.
- Do not keep editing while under review. Lock it and leave it.
- Do not pay anyone promising a guaranteed 24-hour reinstatement. Nobody controls Google's queue.

Platforms rarely disclose the exact rule broken, so remediation is inferred from published guidelines rather than told to the user.
