Criminal defense law firms

Criminal defense marketing: the search happens in a panic, and the first firm that answers is hired

When someone is arrested, a family member usually does the searching, from a phone, often in the middle of the night. They call more than one firm and tend to hire the one that picks up and speaks to them calmly. Your marketing has to be there for that call.

Quick answer

Criminal defense law firm marketing means being found and answered during the worst moments of a family's life, and giving them accurate information. Searches are local, urgent and mobile ("criminal defense lawyer near me", "DUI lawyer", "bail bond question"), and the decision is made fast, so the Map Pack, a clear practice-area page and an intake line that works at any hour decide who gets the call. Defense work is shaped by plea outcomes: the Vera Institute of Justice reports that most criminal cases that end in conviction (97 per cent in large urban state courts in 2009 and 90 per cent in federal court in 2014) end in guilty pleas, which is why clients hire for judgment and negotiation as much as trial skill. Plans run $1,000 to $3,500 USD a month.

What you are up against

Four frustrations that cost defense firms clients

These come from how an urgent, emotional and tightly regulated purchase works. Check each against your own intake log.

  • The call you miss is the client you loseAn arrest does not wait for office hours. A family that reaches voicemail calls the next number, and does not call back.
  • Paid clicks for the best searches are costlyCompetition for 'DUI lawyer' and similar searches is intense. A firm that depends only on paid search pays more for each client than a firm that also ranks locally.
  • Advertising rules limit what you can promiseLawyer-advertising rules prohibit false or misleading communication. Claims about results, specialisation or success rates need care, and a hopeful tone on a page can be a compliance problem.
  • Clients are scared, ashamed and asking different questionsPeople search for answers they are afraid to ask aloud. A page that answers calmly, without judgement, earns the call.

The outcome you are selling

What a family is really buying

They are buying a calm voice, a clear next step and a lawyer who will protect the person they love. A page cannot promise an outcome, and must not try.

Demand map

Four buyers, four searches

Many searches come from the family, not the person arrested, and happen at night. The firm that is visible in the Map Pack, has a clear page for the charge and answers the call is the firm that gets the first conversation.

What the research says

Most cases end in a plea, so clients hire for negotiation

The Vera Institute of Justice reports that most criminal cases that end in conviction are decided by guilty plea: 97 per cent in large urban state courts in 2009, and 90 per cent in federal court in 2014. It adds that researchers estimate more than 90 per cent of those pleas come from plea bargaining.

The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers makes the same point in its trial-penalty work, saying that only two to three per cent of federal convictions come from trial. The implication for marketing is that a client is usually buying judgment and negotiation. A page that explains that honestly beats one that promises acquittal, and it stays inside the advertising rules.

The math

What one retained case does to the monthly fee

Fees range from a modest misdemeanour to a serious felony. The example uses a mid-sized retained case to show the method.

Example arithmetic for a criminal defense attorney
Management fee (ad spend is extra)Jobs that cover it at $3,375 gross profit eachEnquiries needed at a 25% close rate
$1,000 a month1 jobabout 4 qualified enquiries
$3,500 a month2 jobsabout 8 qualified enquiries

Read this before you trust the table

These are example numbers chosen for the arithmetic: a job value of $7,500 for one retained criminal defense case, a 45% margin and a 25% close rate. They are not a benchmark for your market and not a forecast of what we will deliver. Replace each with your own figures from the last twelve months. Our plans run $1,000 to $3,500 USD a month, and the budget planning guide shows how to work out your own cost per booked job.

What we run for this trade

The four pieces we build around a defense firm

  • An architecture built on intentCharge pages, stage pages and an explainer on how the process works are each written with sources and no promised outcomes. Each page answers one search, so there are no copy-pasted city pages. A Search-Ready Website runs $1,500 to $3,000 USD, and competitive or multi-location builds start at $3,000 (see what sets the price).
  • A phone that answers every timeArrests happen at night. The receptionist answers kindly, records the basics and routes urgent calls to your on-call lawyer. It does not give legal advice, and your firm decides what it records and where it is stored. The AI Receptionist is $1,500 USD a month and can be added to a site at launch or later.
  • Your software, connectedIntake data flows into the CRM or case-management software you use, with the source recorded so you can see which pages and calls become retained cases. How the integrations work.
  • Pages that load fast on a phoneA person searching at 2am on a phone will not wait for a slow page, so the call button and intake form load first. Google's published good thresholds are a Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds and Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1 (our speed guide).

Questions we get

Frequently asked questions

How do criminal defense firms get more calls at night?

By ranking in the Map Pack, publishing clear pages for the charges you handle and using an answering service or AI receptionist that picks up every call. See the AI Receptionist and local SEO for law firms.

What can a defense lawyer say about results on a website?

Only what the advertising rules in your state allow. ABA Model Rule 7.1 bars false or misleading statements, including omissions. We do not write result guarantees or success-rate claims, and we ask your compliance lead to review every page.

Can the AI Receptionist handle confidential intake?

It can answer, record the basics and route the call. It does not give legal advice or accept a client. Your firm decides how much it collects, whether calls are recorded and where the data is kept, and we discuss consent and confidentiality wording with you before launch.

How much does criminal defense marketing cost?

Local SEO plans run $1,000 to $3,500 USD a month. A Search-Ready Website is $1,500 to $3,000 USD, with competitive builds from $3,000, and the AI Receptionist is $1,500 USD a month. Pricing explains what moves each.

Is paid search worth it for criminal defense?

It can be, because the intent is high, but the clicks are expensive. Measure cost per retained case, not cost per click, and see Google Ads management and call tracking. We have not verified published cost-per-click figures for this practice area.

How long until I see results?

Most clients see movement within six to twelve weeks on the 12-week roadmap. No ranking can be guaranteed.
