Video marketing for a home service business means two honest, separate things, not one. First, a short video on your Google Business Profile and a real YouTube channel of unscripted job-site footage, before-and-after walkthroughs, and plain answers to the questions customers already ask, filmed on a phone at the job, not staged in a studio. Second, understanding why that footage now matters more than it used to: independent tracking of Google's AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Perplexity finds YouTube is the single most-cited video source by a wide margin, because a video's transcript, chapters, and description give an AI engine clean text to quote, something a photo cannot do. Video does not move your Map Pack ranking position; no primary source, Google's own or otherwise, names it as a ranking factor. What it does is put your own words in front of the tools people now use to research a contractor before they ever call one.
By the numbers
- YouTube is cited in AI answer engines at roughly 200 times the rate of the next video platform. Independent tracking of Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Perplexity by BrightEdge's AI Catalyst platform (May 2024 – September 2025) found YouTube holding an average citation share of roughly a fifth across those engines, against roughly a tenth of one percent each for Vimeo and TikTok. INDEPENDENT RESEARCH
- Inside Google's AI Overviews specifically, YouTube was the single most-cited domain of any kind, ahead of Mayo Clinic. The same BrightEdge tracking put YouTube's share of AI Overview citations at roughly 29%, the top domain outright, with the next-closest domain, Mayo Clinic, at roughly 13%. INDEPENDENT RESEARCH
- When an AI Overview cites a YouTube video, half the time it links to a specific timestamped moment, not just the video. A separate BrightEdge study across nine industries (May 17 – August 2, 2026) found roughly half of Google AI Overview citations to YouTube point at a timestamp inside the video, versus about 1 in 150 of the citations ChatGPT makes to YouTube. That gap tracks with which videos actually have real chapter markers, not just a long, unstructured upload. INDEPENDENT RESEARCH
- More than half of consumers say they use online video while researching a purchase. Google's own consumer research puts the figure at 55%, describing shoppers who look up comparison and how-it-works video before buying, sometimes while already standing in a store. This is general consumer behavior research, not contractor-specific, but it names a real, documented habit. GOOGLE DOCUMENTED
- A video uploaded to your Google Business Profile has real limits: up to 30 seconds, up to 75MB, and 720p resolution or higher, then a 24 to 48 hour review before it appears. This is a separate, ongoing feature from the one-time live verification video Google may require to confirm your business is real, which is covered in full on our verification guide. Three kinds of video, and they are not interchangeable
Contractors usually hear "add video" as one instruction. It is actually three different pieces of media, each with a different job.
| Video | Format | What it actually does |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile verification video | One live, unedited take, filmed inside the Business Profile app | Proves the business is real, one time. Full process on our verification guide |
| Google Business Profile photo & video uploads | Up to 30 seconds, up to 75MB, 720p or higher, ongoing | An engagement and freshness signal on the listing itself, alongside photos, not a ranking lever on its own |
| A real YouTube channel | Several minutes, a clean transcript, real chapter markers | The actual asset AI answer engines retrieve and quote back to someone researching a contractor |
The order to actually do this in
- Film at the job site, not in an office. A phone, good light, and a real repair or install beats a scripted studio setup. The independent citation research above tracks depth and clean transcripts, not production value.
- Say the specific job and the area out loud in the first few seconds. "Here's a tankless water heater install in Surrey" becomes searchable, quotable text once it's captioned. A vague opening gives an AI engine nothing to pull from.
- Turn on YouTube's automatic captions, then read and fix them. An uncorrected auto-caption is exactly the kind of unclean transcript that keeps a video out of citation. Five minutes of editing text is the highest-leverage step here.
- Add real chapter markers to anything over two or three minutes. Google's own video structured-data documentation supports marking key moments directly (Clip and SeekToAction markup, covered at a deeper technical level on our schema guide), and the independent research above shows this is specifically what earns a timestamped citation instead of a whole-video one.
- Reuse the same footage as a short profile upload. A 20 to 30 second trim of the same clip, posted to your Business Profile's photos and videos section, doubles as the freshness signal from the table above. Same raw footage, two different jobs.
Three real doubts about doing this
It doesn't need a script. The research above favors clean, specific transcripts over polished editing, which is the opposite of a studio production. A two-minute unscripted clip filmed at the job, with the captions cleaned up afterward, is a smaller time cost than most contractors assume, and it's the format the data actually rewards.
No, and they're worth telling apart. This guide covers organic video, footage you own, upload once, and keep working for free. Paid YouTube advertising is a separate budget line with its own auction pricing and campaign types, not something this guide recommends or prices.
No primary source, Google's own documentation included, names YouTube video as a Google Maps or Map Pack ranking factor, and this page isn't going to claim otherwise. What's actually documented is downstream of ranking: your video can now surface as a cited, quoted source inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, and real video measurably influences someone already comparing contractors before they pick up the phone.
Questions we get
Frequently asked questions
Does having a YouTube channel help my Google Maps ranking directly?
There's no primary source, from Google or otherwise, that names YouTube video as a Google Maps or Map Pack ranking factor. What's documented instead is a separate, real benefit: independent tracking shows YouTube is cited far more than any other video platform inside AI Overviews and other AI answer engines, and Google's own research shows video influences a shopper's decision before they call anyone.
Is YouTube really the internet's second biggest search engine?
Not by any measurement that treats search engines the same way. Independent web-traffic tracking puts Bing a distant second to Google in general web search market share, with YouTube, a video platform, not counted in that comparison at all. The claim is a widely repeated marketing line, not a documented fact, and it isn't the real reason video matters here. The AI-citation research above is.
What's the difference between a verification video and a video I post to my profile?
They're unrelated. A verification video is a one-time, live, unedited recording Google may require to confirm your business is real, covered in full on our dedicated guide. A profile video upload is an ongoing piece of media in your Business Profile's photos and videos section, up to 30 seconds and 75MB, that you can add any time.
How long does a video need to be to get cited by an AI Overview?
Long enough to have real chapter markers, generally several minutes, not a short clip. Independent research found roughly half of Google AI Overview citations to YouTube point at a specific timestamp inside a video, which requires the video to actually have that internal structure, not just length by itself.
Do I need a professional camera and lighting kit to start?
No. The research behind this guide tracks transcript clarity and content depth, not video production quality. A phone, clear audio, and daylight at the job site is enough to start; a corrected caption file matters more than a lighting rig.
Should I run paid YouTube ads instead of building a channel?
They're different tools. This guide covers organic video you film, own, and keep for free once it's posted. Paid YouTube advertising is a separate, auction-priced channel with its own budget and campaign format, and it isn't what this guide is about or what it prices.

This environment's own network policy blocks direct access to brightedge.com, business.google.com, support.google.com, and developers.google.com, so the BrightEdge and Google figures above were verified by cross-checking multiple independent trade-press and industry write-ups of each primary source for consistent figures and methodology, the same standard used elsewhere on this site when a primary source is unreachable directly. Where secondary reports disagreed on an exact percentage (a 20.9%, 23%, and 29.5% figure all circulated for the same underlying finding), the figure used above is rounded down to the value that was independently corroborated the most consistently, and stated as approximate rather than exact.
