Local SEO improves how visible a business is to people searching from within its service area. It works on four things: the Google Business Profile, reviews, consistent business information across the web, and a clear, fast website. Google decides local rankings on relevance, distance and prominence, and there is no way to pay for a better local rank. For a business whose customers are within driving distance, local SEO is usually the highest-return part of digital marketing, because Map Pack and Maps searches carry strong intent to hire.
By the numbers
- Google names three ranking factors for local results: relevance, distance and prominence. It states there is no way to pay for a better local ranking. GOOGLE DOCUMENTED
- Most of the strongest Local Pack signals come from the Google Business Profile itself, categories, services, attributes and hours chief among them, per Whitespark’s 2026 survey. INDEPENDENT RESEARCH
- Review recency now counts for more than raw volume, and most consumers will not use a business rated below four stars (BrightLocal, 2026). INDEPENDENT RESEARCH
- “[service] near me” and “[service] in [town]” queries carry substantial, trackable volume (DataForSEO, 2026), which is the demand local SEO is built to capture. INDUSTRY DATA
What local SEO is, and what it is not
- Getting into the Map Pack and Google Maps for nearby searches.
- A complete, accurate Google Business Profile.
- A steady flow of recent, genuine reviews, answered.
- Consistent name, address and phone across the web.
- Clear pages for each service and each service area.
- A fast site that works on a phone.
- A way to pay Google for a higher local rank. That does not exist.
- Ranking a site nationally for broad keywords. That is general SEO.
- Buying hundreds of directory listings. Consistency beats volume.
- Geotagging photos. Google strips photo location data on upload.
- A guarantee of position one. Google warns against anyone who promises it.
- A one-time fix. Reviews and prominence compound over time.
The three factors Google uses
- Relevance. How well your Business Profile and pages match what the person searched. Set by your primary category, your services list, and the words on your site.
- Distance. How far you are from the searcher, or from the area named in the search. This is why you can rank first at your own address and be invisible a few kilometres away.
- Prominence. How well known and trusted the business is: review count, rating and recency, links and mentions across the web, and overall activity. This is the part you build.
You cannot change distance. Relevance is mostly a setup job. Prominence is the ongoing work, and it is where a competitor with a worse rating can still outrank you.
How local SEO differs from regular SEO
- The target. Regular SEO chases national or topic-wide keywords. Local SEO targets nearby searchers and the Map Pack.
- The main asset. Regular SEO revolves around the website. Local SEO revolves around the Google Business Profile, with the website in support.
- The deciding factor. Distance from the searcher barely matters for national SEO and is one of the biggest factors locally.
- How you measure it. A single rank check works for a national keyword. Local visibility needs a geo-grid across the service area, because position changes point to point.

Which businesses need local SEO
Any business that serves customers in a defined geographic area and competes to be found on Google Maps: home service trades, healthcare and professional practices, retail with a storefront, restaurants, contractors covering a radius. If your customers are local and they search before they call, local SEO is where the calls are decided. A purely online business selling nationally does not need it.
