When an AI Overview buries your Map Pack, and what to do
Quick answer
An AI Overview does not delete the Map Pack. It sits on top of it, so fewer people scroll to the pack and every position below the top three costs more clicks than it used to. The fix is not more profile edits. It is making your pages clear, specific and verifiable enough that the AI answer names you, and keeping your profile and reviews strong so the pack still earns the call.

On a growing share of local searches, Google now leads with an AI Overview or opens straight into AI Mode. The Map Pack and the blue links are still there, but they load further down. The customer gets an answer before they reach your listing.
If your pack position held steady while your calls slipped, this is the most likely reason. Here is what actually moved and where to aim your effort.
What changed on the page
- Map Pack near the top, three businesses, visible without scrolling.
- Most clicks went to the top three, then to organic results.
- Being fourth or fifth still caught spillover traffic.
- One strong signal set, the profile, did most of the work.
- An AI answer fills the first screen, sometimes naming two or three businesses.
- The pack loads below it; fewer people scroll that far.
- Fourth or fifth now catches almost nothing.
- Two signal sets matter: the profile for the pack, and clear pages for the AI answer.
What still earns the click
The gap between third and fourth was always real. It is now a cliff. Profile completeness, review volume and recency, and proximity still decide this, so the pack work does not change, it just matters more.
AI answers pull from the normal index and known business data. They favour pages that state the service and the town plainly, back claims with specifics, and are easy to parse. That is a content job, not a profile setting.
An AI engine corroborates a business across sources before it names one. Matching name, address and category everywhere is what lets it say “you” with confidence instead of picking a competitor.
Recent, specific, answered reviews support both the pack and the trust an AI answer needs to recommend you. A wall of old five-stars with no replies does neither.

- Open Search Console. Filter to local queries. Look for terms where impressions are flat but clicks and average position have slipped.
- Run a geo-grid. If your pack position is genuinely fine, the lost clicks are going to the AI answer, not to a competitor.
- Search your main terms. Note whether an AI Overview appears and who it names. If it names competitors and not you, that is your target.
- Read your top pages as a stranger. Do they say the service and the town in the first line? Do they prove anything? If not, that is the content work.
Does an AI Overview replace the Map Pack?
No. On many local searches the AI answer sits at the top and the Map Pack and organic results load underneath it. Fewer people scroll, so a lower pack position costs more clicks than it used to, but the pack has not gone away and calls still come from it.
How does a business get named inside the AI answer?
The same way it earns a normal citation: a complete Google Business Profile, consistent name and address across the web, real reviews, and pages that state the service and the town in plain, specific language. AI answers pull from the standard index and known business data, not a separate feed you can buy into.
Should I stop caring about the Map Pack then?
No. Treat the AI answer and the pack as two doors into the same shop. Keep the profile and reviews strong for the pack, and make your pages clear and verifiable so the AI answer quotes you. The work overlaps more than it competes.
How do I tell if AI Overviews are hurting my traffic?
Check Search Console for local queries where impressions hold steady but clicks and average position slip. Run a geo-grid to see your true pack coverage. If the pack position is fine but clicks are down, the AI answer is taking the top of the page and the fix is content clarity, not more profile edits.
