We asked Ask Maps how to win Ask Maps. Some of its advice breaks Google’s rules.

Omar Alocozy·Digital Handshake Media·7 min read

Quick answer

Ask Maps can be wrong about itself. When we asked it how an agency should win Ask Maps, it told us to coach clients on what to write in reviews. Google’s review policy bans asking for specific content. Other popular tips point to features Google already shut down, like profile chat and the Q&A box. Here are seven claims you will hear this year, what Google’s own pages say, and what to do instead.

Is your trade still open in your city?We take one client per trade, per city. The call starts with that check, not a pitch.

The answer sounded smart. That was the problem.

We asked Ask Maps a simple question: what would a top agency do to win Ask Maps? It gave a long, sure list. Nested schema. Booking inside the chat. Reviews that name-drop services and software. Some of it is fine. Some of it points to features that no longer exist. One tip breaks Google’s own review rules.

At the bottom of the screen, in small print, it said: “AI can make mistakes.” So we checked each claim against Google’s own pages.

2024 The year Google ended chat on Business Profiles. It shut off on July 31.
2025 The year Google shut the Q&A API, on November 3, while it reworks Q&A.
0 Ask Maps scores Google has published. There is no official number to chase.

Myth 1: “Coach customers to name your services in reviews”

What Google says: its review policy says a business should not “request that specific content be included” in a review. It also bans rewards for reviews. And it bans asking only happy customers.

Do this instead: ask every customer the same plain way, right after the job. Send the link. Say thanks. Let them write what happened. Real details show up on their own when the work is good. Here is how to ask inside the rules.

Myth 2: “Put a chat bot or booking hook inside your Google profile”

What Google says: Google ended chat and call history on Business Profiles on July 31, 2024. The actions Google has announced inside Ask Maps are restaurant bookings, food orders with partners like Square and Toast, hotel searches and event tickets. Google has not announced any for trades so far.

Do this instead: if your profile shows a Bookings section, Google lets you add your own booking link there. Then make sure someone answers the phone. A missed call is a lost job, with or without AI.

Myth 3: “Seed your Q&A with your own questions”

What Google says: the Q&A API was shut down on November 3, 2025, while Google changes how questions work. Industry trackers report Ask Maps now fills that role.

Do this instead: put your answers on your own website, where they last. Six places your answers need to live now.

Myth 4: “Geotag your photos so Ask Maps knows where you work”

What the evidence says: geotagged photos top the myths list in Whitespark’s 2026 survey of local SEO experts. Google strips location data from photos when you upload them.

Do this instead: post real photos of real jobs. Name the town in the caption on your own site. See our geotagging guide for the tests.

Myth 5: “Get your Ask Maps score to 100”

What Google says: nothing. Google has not published an Ask Maps score. It has said answers are personal. Ask Maps can remember past chats and use what a person has saved. Two people asking the same thing can see different names.

Do this instead: test it yourself with ten prompts, from more than one phone and more than one spot. Then track your map coverage with a grid of points, not one number.

Myth 6: “AI punishes businesses that hide their prices”

What Google says: we could not find any Google page that says this. It may be true one day. Today it is a guess.

Do this instead: publish a real price range anyway, because customers ask. In our own test, Ask Maps repeated the price range from our pricing page. It cannot repeat a price you never wrote down.

Myth 7: “Get lots of reviews fast to hit a number”

What Google says: its policy removes reviews that arrive in odd bursts or patterns, if they look like a push on your rating. Paid reviews are banned too.

Do this instead: aim for a steady flow. In the 2026 expert survey, review count ranks ninth among map factors. How recent your reviews are ranks eleventh. A few real reviews every month beats a pile in one week. See why steady beats a burst.

The quick verdicts

Against Google’s policy. Ask everyone, the same way, and let them write.
Profile chat ended in 2024. Add a booking link if your profile offers one.
The Q&A API is gone. Put answers on your website.
Top myth in the 2026 survey. Google strips the data.
No such score exists. Test with prompts and a grid.
No Google source. Publish prices because customers ask.
Unusual patterns can get reviews removed. Go steady.

If an AI tells you how to beat an AI, check its sources first.

Is it allowed to ask customers for Google reviews?

Yes. Google lets businesses ask for reviews that reflect a real experience. Ask every customer, not only happy ones, offer nothing in return, and do not tell them what to write.

Can I still post questions and answers on my Google profile?

Google shut down the Q&A API on November 3, 2025 while it changes how questions work, and industry trackers report Ask Maps now fills that role. Put your answers on your own website and in your profile description instead.

Can customers book a trade directly inside Ask Maps?

Not as of October 2026. The actions Google has announced in Ask Maps are restaurant bookings, food orders, hotel searches and event tickets. You can still add your own booking link to your profile if Google offers that section for your business.

Is there an official Ask Maps ranking score?

No. Google has not published one, and Ask Maps answers change with the person’s location and history. Anyone quoting an Ask Maps score made it up.
