5 signs your local SEO is broken

Omar Alocozy·Digital Handshake Media·6 min read

Quick answer

There are five. You only rank near your own address. No new reviews come in. Your pages are not indexed. You cannot see any measurement. And nobody can tell you what changed last month. Each has a specific fix. A free scan shows which apply in minutes.

You pay every month. The report looks busy. The phone does not.

Local SEO is slow, so a quiet few months can be normal. But some quiet is not normal. It is a sign the work is not working.

Here are the five that matter. If one fits, you have a specific problem, not a vague one.

The five signs

Check your main service from home, then from a few kilometres away. If you vanish past your own street, your footprint is not growing. Proximity is about 55% of local ranking, so this needs reviews, town pages and consistent listings to widen. Nobody is doing that.

Review recency is a top-five factor. If you got two reviews this quarter and your competitor got twenty, the gap is the problem. A working campaign has a review request going out after every job.

Open Google Search Console and look at the Pages report. If service and town pages are sitting in "Not indexed", they cannot rank at all. That is a technical fault, not slow progress.

No grid scan, no before picture, no report you understand. If you cannot see where you rank across your area and how that changed, you are paying for work you cannot check.

Ask your provider what they did in the last 30 days and what it was meant to move. A clear answer is a good sign. "We have been optimising" with no specifics is not work you can trust.

Broken, or just slow?

Local SEO takes months. So how do you tell a broken campaign from one that is still building?

  • Reviews are coming in weekly.
  • New pages are indexed and starting to show for easier terms.
  • The grid scan shows green creeping outward, even a little.
  • You can see a plan and what stage you are at.
Slow shows small movement. Broken shows none, and cannot say why.

What to do about each

  1. Only ranking at your address: start a review push across every suburb, build real town pages, fix listing consistency.
  2. No new reviews: get a request going out the day each job closes, and reply to every one.
  3. Pages not indexed: check Search Console, fix the block or the thin content, resubmit the sitemap.
  4. No measurement: get a geo-grid baseline now, then re-scan monthly so change is visible.
  5. No clear updates: ask for a plain monthly summary of what was done and why. If it does not come, that answers the question.

When it is the provider, not the SEO

Sometimes the strategy is fine and the execution is not. The tells: no reporting you can read, no answer to "what did you do", a long contract with an early-exit fee, and a grid scan that never appears.

You are allowed to ask for a plain-English monthly summary and a live view of where you rank. A provider who cannot give you both is the broken part.

How do I know if my local SEO is working?

A working campaign shows small, steady movement. New reviews weekly. New pages getting indexed and ranking for easier terms. A geo-grid scan where your coverage creeps outward over months. If none of that is happening after three months, it is not slow. It is broken.

What are the warning signs of a bad local SEO campaign?

There are five. You only rank near your address. No new reviews come in. Your pages sit in "Not indexed" in Search Console. You have no grid scan or baseline to check progress against. And your provider cannot say what they did last month or what it was meant to move.

How long before I should worry local SEO is not working?

Give it about three months. Small wins on easier terms and a steady review pace should be visible by then. If absolutely nothing has moved and there is no measurement to look at, that is the point to have a direct conversation.

My pages are not showing on Google at all. Why?

Most often they are not indexed. Check the Pages report in Google Search Console. Causes include a leftover "noindex" tag, a robots.txt block, or pages too thin for Google to bother with. Fix the cause and resubmit the sitemap.

Should I fire my local SEO provider?

Not on a hunch. First ask for a plain monthly summary of the work and a live view of your grid rankings. If they cannot or will not provide either, and nothing has moved, that is your answer. Get a free independent scan for a second opinion before you decide.

  2. Whitespark, Local Search Ranking Factors (2026 edition): proximity is roughly 55% of Local Pack weight; review signals, including recency, are a top-five factor.
  3. BrightLocal, Local Consumer Review Survey (2026): consumers weigh review recency and volume heavily, so a stalled review pace shows up as lost visibility and lost trust.
  4. DataForSEO, Keyword Data and SERP datasets (2026): "[service] in [town]" queries carry real, trackable volume, so a page that never ranks for any of them points to a technical or indexing fault, not slow progress.
