ChatGPT's impact on SEO: what changes for a local business and what stays the same

The headlines say ChatGPT is ending search. The documentation says something narrower. Google needs a page to be indexed with a snippet. OpenAI needs one crawler allowed. Below: what each company wrote, what it means for a local business, and a fifteen-minute check you can run today.

Quick answer

ChatGPT's impact on SEO is smaller than the headlines and more specific than most advice says. Google's documentation says a page needs only to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no extra technical requirements. OpenAI's documentation says its OAI-SearchBot crawler surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, and that blocking it keeps your site out of ChatGPT search answers. Rankings work, clear content and accurate business details still carry most of the weight. What changes is a short list of crawler settings and the way you check your visibility.

By the numbers

  • To be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Google states there are no additional technical requirements (page last updated 2025-12-10). GOOGLE DOCUMENTED
  • AI Overviews and AI Mode may use "query fan-out": several related searches across subtopics and data sources, which can surface a wider set of supporting links than a classic search. GOOGLE DOCUMENTED
  • AI feature traffic is reported inside Search Console, in the Performance report under the Web search type. There is no separate AI report to wait for. GOOGLE DOCUMENTED
  • OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search. Sites opted out of it won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. OPENAI DOCUMENTED
  • GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User are separate settings. You can appear in ChatGPT search and still disallow training. OpenAI says changes to robots.txt can take about 24 hours to take effect for search. OPENAI DOCUMENTED
  • Our own robots.txt allows all three OpenAI bots, plus Anthropic's, Perplexity's and Google-Extended, checked on 2026-10-16. DHM'S OWN CONFIG

The four bots that matter, in plain words

Three belong to OpenAI. One is Google's. Each does a different job, and only some of them control whether you show up.

What changes and what does not

What stays the same

Being crawlable, indexed and accurate. Google's own requirement for AI features is the same as for any result: indexed and snippet-eligible. Your Business Profile, your reviews and the details that match across the web still decide whether anyone trusts you. See business info consistency for AI.

What changes

Two new switches and one new habit. The switches are OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot in robots.txt. The habit is asking assistants the questions your customers ask and recording what comes back. Treat each answer as a dated observation, not a ranking.

What we can't tell you

Nobody outside the platforms can promise a citation in ChatGPT or an AI Overview. We don't guarantee them, the same way we don't guarantee map positions. We can show you what is blocked, what is missing and what to fix.

A fifteen-minute AI visibility check

Run these in order. Each takes a few minutes.

  1. Read your robots.txt. Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and look for OAI-SearchBot. If it is disallowed and you want to appear in ChatGPT, remove the block and allow about 24 hours.
  2. Check your key pages are indexed. In Search Console, inspect your service page and your homepage. Google's rule for AI features is the same as for results: indexed, with a snippet.
  3. Ask five real questions. Type the questions a customer in your area would ask, such as "who fixes furnaces near [your suburb]". Write down who is named, which sources are linked, and the date.
  4. Compare the named businesses to yours. Look at which pages and directories those answers point to. Gaps there are your content and listing to-do list.
  5. Fix the basics first. Match your name, address and phone everywhere, and open each page with a direct answer. Our guides on how ChatGPT finds local businesses and local SEO for AI Overviews go step by step.

Questions we get

Frequently asked questions

Does ChatGPT replace SEO?

Nothing in Google's or OpenAI's documentation says so. ChatGPT search relies on a crawler, OAI-SearchBot, reading pages on the open web, so a crawlable, accurate site still comes first. What changes is a short list of crawler settings and how you check your visibility. That is our reading of the documents, not a prediction.

Do I need special markup to appear in Google's AI Overviews or AI Mode?

No. Google's documentation says a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet, and that there are no additional technical requirements. Traffic from these features is counted in the Web search type of the Search Console Performance report.

Should I block GPTBot?

That is your call. OpenAI says GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train its models and that disallowing it signals your content should not be used for training. OpenAI also says each setting is independent, so you can allow OAI-SearchBot to appear in ChatGPT search while disallowing GPTBot.

What happens if I block OAI-SearchBot?

OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links. If you want to be found in ChatGPT, allow it.

Does robots.txt control ChatGPT-User?

Not reliably. OpenAI says ChatGPT-User visits happen when a person asks ChatGPT something, and that because those actions are user-initiated, robots.txt rules may not apply. It also says ChatGPT-User is not used to decide whether content appears in Search.

How long does a robots.txt change take to work?

For ChatGPT search, OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours after you update robots.txt for its systems to adjust.
