ChatGPT finds local businesses by running a live web search when the question needs current or local information. Then it writes an answer from the pages it pulls back. It leans on third-party sources it can verify: business directories, review sites, maps data and discussion threads. It does not read your Google Business Profile directly the way Google Maps does. So to show up, you need to be described the same way across those sources, by name, service and location. And you need a website that clearly says what you do and where.
By the numbers
- Third-party sources dominate: independent July 2026 testing of a comparable assistant found local answers built mostly from directories and forum threads, not one business’s own page. INDEPENDENT RESEARCH
- Its own category: AI search visibility became a separate ranking category in Whitespark’s 2026 survey, with citation signals weighted more than for the Local Pack. INDEPENDENT RESEARCH

What ChatGPT can see, and what it leans on
Same question. Two sides of how it gets answered. Tap between them.
- The open web, through a live search when the question needs it.
- Your website, if it is crawlable and says clearly what you do and where.
- Public directory and review pages that name your business.
- Maps and place data that feed its search provider.
- Sources it can corroborate: the same facts, stated the same way, in more than one place.
- Directories and review platforms over a single self-published claim.
- Recent pages over stale ones for anything time-sensitive.
- Businesses that are easy to identify: one clear name, one address, one phone.
Why it is different from ranking on Google Maps
Google Maps reads your Business Profile directly and weighs distance heavily. ChatGPT does not. It has no live sense of where the person is unless they say so. It cannot see your profile fields. It works from what the web says about you, filtered through what it can verify.
So a business can sit in the Map Pack and still be missing from ChatGPT’s answer, if the third-party web does not describe it clearly. The reverse happens too. A business with strong, consistent coverage across directories and reviews can get named even when its Map Pack position is middling.
What to actually do
One exact business name. One address format. One phone number. The same on your site, your profile, and every directory. Corroboration is what an assistant trusts.
A real page that names the service and the area in plain words. Not a slideshow. If the crawler cannot read a clear statement of your business, it has nothing to ground on.
The directories and review platforms for your trade and city. Accurate listings, real reviews. This is where a lot of AI local answers are actually built from.
Recent, steady reviews with replies. Recency carries weight for AI answers, and an assistant summarising sentiment will reflect what is fresh.
Hidden text, keyword-stuffed pages, bought mentions on unrelated sites. Google’s own guidance says the systems that reward genuine authority also filter manipulation. The same logic applies here.
How to check if ChatGPT recommends you
There is no official console for it. The honest method is to ask. Open a fresh session. Ask the questions a real customer would ask: “best [trade] in [city],” “[trade] near me open now,” “who should I call for [problem] in [area].” Record what it says and which sources it cites. Repeat it on a schedule, because the answer changes as the web does.
