Google Maps ranks a business by how well it matches the search (relevance), how close it is to the searcher (distance), and how well known and trusted it is (prominence). Relevance is set by your Business Profile categories, services and description, and the website behind them. Distance you cannot change. Prominence is built from review count, rating and recency, links and mentions across the web, and overall activity. The Map Pack shows three results, and which three depends on where the searcher is standing, so a business can rank first at its address and not appear a few kilometres away.

The three factors, and what feeds each
What Google Maps is weighing
How well your profile and site match what was searched. Fed by the primary category (the strongest single field), secondary categories, the services list and their descriptions, the business description, and the words on the matching website page. If Google cannot tell what you do, it guesses, usually narrower than you are.
How far you are from the searcher, or from the place named in the search. The largest factor, and the one nobody controls. It is why a ranking observed at your own address is not what a customer across town sees, and why you scan a grid of points rather than one.
How well known and trusted Google believes you are. Fed by review count, rating and recency; links and mentions from other sites; the consistency of your name, address and phone across the web; and how active and complete the profile is. This is the part you build over weeks and months.
What Google Maps does not use
- Payment. There is no way to pay for a higher organic Map position. Ads are a separate, labelled slot.
- Photo GPS data. Google strips location metadata from images on upload, so geotagging does nothing.
- Keywords in the business name. Not a ranking trick; the top cause of suspension.
- Volume of thin directory listings. Consistency across the important ones matters, not the count.
- Posting frequency as a lever. Posts are a minor freshness signal, not a ranking control.
Why the same search shows different results to different people
Two people searching “emergency electrician” a few kilometres apart see different Map Packs, because distance is weighted so heavily. Add personalisation from search history and the picture shifts again. This is the single most misunderstood thing about Maps ranking: your position is not one number, it is a shape across a map, and improving it means widening that shape. That is what a geo-grid measures and what a single rank check hides.
