If your business is not in the Map Pack for a search it should win, work through this order: confirm the profile is verified and not suspended; check the primary category and the address or service area; search your name and old phone numbers for conflicting or duplicate listings; look at review count and recency versus the businesses that do rank; and run a geo-grid to see whether you rank anywhere in the area or nowhere. A single check from your own desk is not evidence, because position changes with the searcher’s location.
By the numbers
- Local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence, with no way to pay for a better rank (Google). GOOGLE DOCUMENTED
- Nothing on a profile counts until it is verified, and a suspended profile does not appear publicly at all. GOOGLE DOCUMENTED
- Conflicting name, address and phone data across sources caps how far a profile can rise (Whitespark, 2026). INDEPENDENT RESEARCH
- Local pack results returned for the same query differ by the coordinates attached to it (DataForSEO, 2026), so one check from one spot cannot tell you if you are absent everywhere. INDUSTRY DATA
The eight causes, in order to check
Nothing counts toward ranking until the profile is verified. Check the dashboard for a pending verification and complete it by the method Google offers.
A suspended profile disappears from the map entirely. Signs: edits stuck pending, the listing missing even for your exact business name. See the reinstatement sequence.
The primary category decides which searches you are eligible for. Too broad or simply wrong and you will not appear for the specific terms people use.
A hidden address when you have a storefront, a visible one when you should be a service-area business, or a service area that does not include the town you are searching from.
Name, address or phone that disagree across directories, or a second Google listing splitting your signal. Search your name and old numbers to find them. How to fix duplicates.
If the businesses ranking have dozens of recent reviews and you have five from two years ago, prominence is the gap. Recency is weighted, so a steady flow matters.
A slow site, or one with no clear page for the service and town, caps what the profile can achieve. On-page signals carry across the pack, local organic and AI answers.
If everything above is right and you still do not appear from a town far from your address, that is proximity. You widen the radius with area-specific relevance and prominence, not with a setting. How the proximity ceiling works.
Before you change anything: check where you are checking
The most common false alarm is searching from your office or on a signed-in phone and concluding you are invisible. Position depends on the searcher’s location, and personalised results can flatter or hide you. Run a geo-grid, which checks from a grid of points across your area, before you decide anything is broken. It will tell you whether you rank somewhere and drop off, or genuinely appear nowhere.
Run the free 12-point check first, then the hand-run geo-grid audit for the full coverage map.
