To rank in the Google Map Pack: confirm your profile is eligible and accurately named, set the right primary category, complete every field, build a steady review habit with replies, align your website with the profile, and clean your citations. Then measure with a geo-grid, not one search. Google says local ranking comes from relevance, distance and prominence, and there is no way to pay for a better position.

The 7 steps
- Confirm eligibility and identity. The business must qualify for a profile the way it operates. The name must be the real name, with no keywords or cities bolted on. Fix this before anything else.
- Set the right primary category. The single strongest relevance field. Choose the exact Google category that matches most of your paying jobs, not the one with the biggest search volume. How to choose it →
- Complete every field. Services, service area, attributes, hours, special hours, description, and real photos of completed work. Google says a complete, accurate profile is more likely to show for relevant searches.
- Build a review habit with replies. Make it easy for real customers to leave feedback as jobs close. Reply to every review. Recency now matters more than raw count.
- Align the website with the profile. If the profile says “emergency HVAC,” the site should say it too, on a real page, with the service and the area named clearly. Google crawls the site to understand the business.
- Clean citations and NAP. Same name, address and phone across the directories that matter. Fix duplicates and conflicts. Consistency beats volume.
- Measure with a grid. Run a geo-grid before you start and again after. If coverage went green across more of your service area, it worked. If not, you know where to look next.
What will not get you in
Keyword-stuffing the business name. Fake reviews. Fake or virtual locations. Duplicate listings. Geotagging photos, which Google strips on upload and which controlled tests show does nothing. Buying a position, which Google does not sell. These waste time and some risk a suspension.
How long it takes
There is no set timeline. Steps 1 and 2 can move things within weeks because they fix a relevance signal that was wrong. Reviews, citations and website work compound over months. A crowded market takes longer than a quiet one. Anyone who promises a date is guessing.
