Plumbing

Plumbing marketing for the most emergency-weighted search in local business.

No local vertical converts faster or forgives less. The plumber who appears first and answers gets the job, and almost nothing else about the marketing matters in that moment.

Quick answer

Plumbing has the highest emergency weighting of any common local service. A burst pipe or a backed-up main produces a search where three things decide it within minutes: proximity, whether you show as open, and whether a human answers. That makes Google Business Profile accuracy worth more here than almost anywhere, and slow brand marketing worth less. The planned side of the business, like repipes, renovations and water heaters, behaves like a normal considered purchase and is won on reviews and proof instead.

By the numbers

  • ~55% of Local Pack ranking is the searcher’s proximity, per Whitespark’s 2026 survey. An emergency plumbing search is almost pure proximity. INDEPENDENT RESEARCH
  • Top-five factor: being open at the time of the search is now among the top five Local Pack factors. INDEPENDENT RESEARCH
  • Under 5 minutes: the decision time on an emergency search. It happens on the Map Pack card, before your website loads. DHM INTERPRETATION

Emergency vs planned: two searches, two strategies

Same trade. Two completely different customers. Tap between them.

  • Decision time: under five minutes.
  • Decided by proximity, open status, and an answered phone.
  • Price barely matters until the diagnosis.
  • Won on the Google Business Profile. Biggest risk: missed calls damaging reviews.

The emergency search is a different animal

Someone standing in an inch of water does not read your about page. The whole decision happens on the Map Pack card. Name, star rating, review count, distance, open or closed, call button. In that moment every part of the profile is doing conversion work, not just ranking work.

There is an uncomfortable implication most agencies will not tell you. If a person does not answer your phone during the hours your profile claims, ranking better will make your reviews worse. You buy more calls, miss some of them, and get punished in public for it. We check your real answer rate on the assessment call before recommending anything. The alternative is selling you a problem.

Where plumbing profiles break

  • 24/7 claimed but not staffed. The most common and most damaging error in the trade. Hours accuracy is now among the top five Local Pack factors INDEPENDENT RESEARCH, and it is also a promise.
  • Primary category set to “Contractor” or “Plumber” when the revenue is in a more specific category such as drain cleaning or water heater installation. Secondary categories exist for a reason.
  • Service area drawn as a wide radius covering areas you would never actually drive to at 11pm.
  • Reviews that all arrive from the same two technicians because only they ask. Build the request into job completion, not into a person's habits.
  • No tracked number, or a tracked number inconsistent with directories. Call tracking is fine; inconsistent NAP data across directories is what caps the profile.

The planned work is where the margin is

Emergency calls build volume and reviews. Repipes, water heater swaps, bathroom renovations and commercial maintenance build the margin. These searches behave differently. The customer researches for days, compares three quotes, reads reviews carefully, and responds to visible proof of similar completed work.

So a plumbing campaign needs two content layers. A fast, proximity-first emergency layer. And a slower service-page layer that ranks for the considered searches and gives the researcher something to be convinced by. Most plumbing websites have only the first. That is why they generate calls but not quotes.

The arithmetic

Emergency call-outs rarely justify a serious marketing spend on their own margin. The case is built on what the emergency call becomes. The water heater replaced three weeks later. The repipe quoted from a service call. The commercial account that started as one blocked drain. If you are not turning emergency work into planned work, ranking better amplifies a leak rather than fixing one. That conversation belongs on the assessment call, before the invoice.

Questions we get

Frequently asked questions

Our phone is answered by an after-hours service. Is that a problem?

Not necessarily, but it should be tested before we spend your money. Answering services vary enormously in whether they can actually dispatch or only take a message. If a caller with a flooding basement gets a message-taker, you have paid for a lead and bought a one-star review. We will say so plainly.

Should we claim 24/7 availability?

Only if it is true. It is a genuine ranking advantage because being open at the time of search now weighs heavily, and it is a genuine reputational liability if unstaffed. Honest extended hours beat dishonest round-the-clock ones every time.

How fast can we rank for emergency plumbing searches?

Faster than most verticals, because much of the advantage sits in profile fields that can be corrected immediately, but still weeks rather than days. Prominence work behind it takes the usual six to twelve weeks.

Do we need a separate page for each service?

For the planned-work side, yes: drain cleaning, water heaters, repiping and renovation plumbing are searched differently and convert differently. For the emergency side the profile does most of the work. We map that structure during month two of the roadmap.
