What the weights actually say
How close the searcher is to your business. The single largest factor in the entire algorithm. You cannot fake it, and you cannot out-spend it with traditional ads.
Primary category, predefined services and business hours. Eight of the ten strongest Local Pack signals come directly from the Google Business Profile itself.
Count, rating and recency. A steady flow of new reviews now outweighs a large, stale accumulation from three years ago.
How clearly your website and service pages match the local search query. The one category that pays off across the Map Pack, organic results and AI answers alike.
Notice what carries more than half the algorithmic weight: proximity. Google restricts your visibility radius because it has no inherent reason to trust that a business across town genuinely serves a searcher’s specific neighborhood. You cannot expand that radius by adding keywords to a page. You expand it by giving Google a reason to believe you actually work there — a relentless stream of geographic proof.
The geotagging myth vs. the freshness reality
For years, agencies sold geotagging as a secret weapon: embed GPS coordinates in your photo files and trick the proximity filter. Controlled testing across 27 locations disproved this outright. Google strips EXIF location data from photos on upload, for privacy reasons, before its systems ever see it. Paying someone to geotag your photos is paying for a step Google deletes before it can matter.
If geotagging is not the lever, what is? Activity, freshness and genuine, dated engagement. Search systems favor Business Profiles that show ongoing, real-world activity. When location-specific updates, authentic photos and real job records get published consistently, that reads as an active business with a real footprint across the broader area — and that reading is what expands the radius proximity otherwise caps.

Google’s AI Overviews now appear on roughly 40 to 60% of tracked local queries, and ranking #1 in the traditional results no longer guarantees an assistant will name you.
