Local SEO guarantee vs warranty: what an honest promise looks like
Quick answer
A ranking guarantee promises an outcome nobody controls, and Google warns against it. An honest provider offers a warranty instead: on the work, the method and the measurement. “We will do this, you will see it in the grid, and if the work is not delivered you get it fixed or refunded” is a warranty. “You will be number one” is a guarantee, and it is either a lie or a lawsuit.

Nobody controls Google’s results. So a ranking guarantee is one of two things. A promise the provider knows they cannot keep. Or a promise written carefully enough to mean almost nothing.
What an honest provider offers is a warranty. Here is the difference.
Guarantee vs warranty
- Promises a position: “#1” or “page one”.
- The outcome depends on Google, competitors and the searcher’s location.
- The provider controls none of those.
- So it is met with an easy term nobody searches, or an argument.
- Promises the work: the tasks, the cadence, the reporting.
- Promises the measurement: a baseline scan and a monthly re-scan.
- Promises a remedy: if the work is not done, it is fixed or refunded.
- Every part of it is inside the provider’s control.
What can honestly be promised
Reviews, listings, profile checks, pages, scans. A named list of what happens each month and roughly how many hours it takes.
A dated baseline geo-grid scan before any work, then a re-scan every month, in an account you can log into. Progress you can see, not take on trust.
A commitment that your coverage across the grid grows over the agreed period when the plan is followed and the required items are supplied. Not a specific rank. A measured direction.
One client per trade, per area, if the provider offers it. You are not competing against another of their clients for the same searches.
A short minimum term, no penalty to leave after it, and you keep the work: the pages, the optimised profile, the audit.
The horror stories, and the clause behind each
The guarantee was met on a phrase with almost zero volume, like “emergency plumber [tiny suburb] near 24-hour”. The clause never named a keyword you would actually want.
The contract had a 12-month term and an early-exit fee. The guarantee had a "results may vary" line that made it unenforceable. You paid nine months for nothing.
The monthly report tracked "keywords improved" from position 90 to position 60. Real movement, zero traffic. Nothing measured what mattered: coverage across the area and calls.
No login to a rank tracker, no plain answer to "what did you do". The contract gave you a report, not access. A warranty gives you access.

Get the free scanHow to turn a guarantee into a warranty
- Ask them to remove the ranking promise. Replace it with a list of the work and the cadence.
- Add the measurement. A dated baseline scan, a monthly re-scan, and your own login.
- Define the remedy. If the itemised work is not delivered, it is completed free or that month is refunded.
- Shorten the term. Three months minimum, then month to month, no exit fee.
- Write down what you keep. The pages, the profile access, the audit, on leaving.
A provider who says yes to all five is offering a warranty. One who will not drop the ranking guarantee is telling you what the deal is really for.
Is a local SEO ranking guarantee legitimate?
It is a warning sign. Nobody controls Google's results, and Google warns against providers who guarantee a number one ranking. A guarantee is usually met with an easy, low-value term or written vaguely enough to be unenforceable. An honest provider commits to the work, the measurement, and measured visibility growth instead.
What is the difference between a guarantee and a warranty in SEO?
A guarantee promises an outcome the provider does not control, like a ranking position. A warranty promises what they do control. The work is done to a defined scope and cadence. The measurement is in place. And there is a remedy if the work is not delivered. A warranty is enforceable. A ranking guarantee usually is not.
What can a local SEO company honestly promise?
Five things. An itemised list of monthly work. A dated baseline scan and monthly re-scans in an account you can access. Measurable visibility growth across the grid over the agreed window, when the plan is followed. Exclusivity if offered. And a clean exit where you keep the work. None of that is a specific rank.
How do I protect myself in a local SEO contract?
Replace any ranking promise with the scope of work and cadence. Require a baseline scan, monthly re-scans and your own login. Define a remedy if the work is not delivered. Keep the minimum term to about three months with no exit fee. Write down what you keep on leaving.
Are local SEO money-back guarantees safe?
Only if the trigger is the work, not the ranking. "Money back if we do not complete the agreed tasks and reporting" is a real remedy. "Money back if you are not on page one" usually comes with conditions that make it near impossible to claim.
