Google Business Profile for plumbers

Google Business Profile for plumbers: the fields that decide the call.

Your Google Business Profile is about a third of your Map Pack ranking and the whole of the emergency decision. Set these fields right and most of the plumbing map is already yours.

Quick answer

Google Business Profile optimization for plumbers is the work of setting the profile fields that drive both ranking and the customer's choice. The order that matters: primary category set to plumber, a full service list, a service area that matches the towns you cover, correct hours with emergency hours marked, recent reviews with replies, and current photos of finished work. Profile signals are about 32% of Local Pack ranking in Whitespark's 2026 survey. That is second only to distance. The profile also does the selling on an emergency search. The customer picks on the map card before your website loads.

By the numbers

  • ~32% of Local Pack ranking sits in Google Business Profile signals, per Whitespark's 2026 survey. INDEPENDENT RESEARCH
  • Primary category is one of the strongest single signals, so a broad or wrong choice quietly costs you rank. INDEPENDENT RESEARCH
  • Top-five factor: showing as open at search time. Mark emergency hours only if they are real. INDEPENDENT RESEARCH
  • Review recency beats review count in the 2026 survey, so a weekly habit matters more than a big old total. INDEPENDENT RESEARCH

The plumbing profile, field by field

Do these in order. The first three decide whether you rank at all.

  1. Primary category: plumber. Add secondary categories only for real work, like drainage service or hot water system supplier. Do not add ones you cannot back.
  2. Services: list every real line. Drain cleaning, water heater repair and install, leak detection, repiping, fixture install, sewer repair. One short plain line each.
  3. Service area: the towns you really cover, closest first. Hide the address if customers do not come to a shop. Do not fill the 20-area limit for its own sake.
  4. Hours: accurate, including holidays. Mark emergency or 24/7 only if a person answers and can send a truck.
  5. Reviews: ask at the end of every job. Keep it weekly. Reply to each one within a day. Never buy or gate reviews.
  6. Photos: real finished jobs, dated, spread across your area. Not stock photos. A geo-tag on the file does nothing. Google strips it.
  7. Products and posts: optional. They keep the profile active. They help the customer choose. They do not move rank.

Where plumbing profiles go wrong

  • 24/7 claimed but not staffed. The most common and most costly error in the trade. It is a ranking signal, and a promise to a caller with a flooded basement.
  • Category set to "Contractor" when a better one exists, like drain cleaning service or water heater installation.
  • Service area drawn as a wide circle over places you would not drive to at 11pm. It thins your relevance where it counts.
  • All reviews from one or two techs because only they ask. Build the request into every job.
  • Name or address that does not match your website and directories. Mismatched details cap the whole profile.
  • A second, older listing from a move or a rebrand. It splits your reviews and signals. Find and merge it. See duplicate listings.

The profile is only half the picture

A perfect profile still fades with distance. To see how far yours carries, run a geo-grid check across your area. To keep the prominence side fed, Map Check-Ins turns each finished job into a dated, mapped record on your site and profile.

Questions we get

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Google Business Profile category for a plumber?

Plumber as the primary. Add secondaries only for work you really do. The primary category is one of the strongest ranking signals. A broad or wrong choice costs you rank.

Should a plumber list a service area or an address?

If customers do not come to a shop, use a service area and hide the address. List the towns you actually cover, closest first. A wide radius over places you would not drive to weakens the areas that matter.

Do photos on the profile help a plumber rank?

They help a little and they help the customer choose. Upload real, current photos of finished jobs across your area. The geo-tag on the file does nothing, because Google removes photo metadata on upload.

How many reviews does a plumber need?

There is no target number. Recency and a steady flow matter more than the total, per the 2026 survey. Ask at the end of every job, keep it weekly, and reply to each review within a day.

My profile got suspended. What now?

Do not create a new one. Read the steps in the profile suspended guide. Fix the likely cause. Then appeal with proof of the business. It can take time.
